December Wraps Up $4.4 Billion 2022 For Indiana Sports Betting

Posted on January 12, 2023

Indiana residents placed over $4.4 billion worth of sports bets in 2022. December’s $431 million handle was the cherry on top for the state’s year.

Basketball and football led the charge for Indiana sports betting once again in December. After a solid 2022, Indiana is in a great position to carry that momentum over into January.

Indiana December 2022 sports betting handle

$431 million worth of sports bets made December another solid month for Indiana’s industry. That was a slight decrease from November’s $452 million worth of bets.

December’s handle translated to about $4 million worth of taxes, and nearly $43 million worth of Indiana sports betting revenue for the gambling companies themselves.

This time of the year is record season for the state’s sports betting business, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Indiana’s numbers climb even higher in January.

In fact, last January produced the Hoosier State’s all-time-high handle for a single month. Indiana residents bet over $500 million on sports in January 2022, and that record could come tumbling down with the next set of numbers.

NFL Playoff betting ahead

December and January are special months for Indiana sports betting. The overlap of the football and basketball calendars creates a huge wave of interest around the state.

Football was the king of the hill in December. Bettors in the state placed over $136 million worth of wagers on the sport last month.

  • Football: $136 million
  • Basketball: $130 million
  • Baseball: $66,000
  • Parlay: $119 million
  • Other: $46 million

Although the football season is starting to wind down, betting on the NFL playoffs will help boost Indiana’s next batch of numbers.

There are a fewer number of games to bet on, but each of those games comes with much higher stakes. That helps to spur betting interest across the Hoosier State, even though the Indianapolis Colts missed the postseason cut this year.

In other words, Indiana sports betting should be off to a hot start once January’s numbers are released.

Hoosiers bet $4.4 billion on sports during 2022

2022 was a stellar year for sports betting in Indiana, and we finally have the full picture now thanks to the latest report from state regulators. December’s numbers were the only missing piece of the puzzle.

Hoosiers bet over $4.4 billion last year. That’s a massive handle that shows just how much Hoosiers love to bet on sports.

Sports betting has become one of the most popular entertainment options in the entire state. Despite its huge level of popularity, Indiana’s market could be facing a decline in 2023.

Indiana sports betting isn’t going anywhere, even if the state’s numbers start to level off this year. The industry is in a strong spot to start the year off on the right foot now that its incredible December is in the books.
