The numbers from June are in. Indiana sports betting revenue and handle were both up significantly year-over-year.
The Indiana Gaming Commission’s latest report revealed that Hoosier State residents wagered a total of $298.2 million last month. Operators collected $30.5 million in adjusted gross revenue.
Both amounts were major increases over June 2023.
As expected, June numbers down from previous month
Any time a state shows year-to-year growth in an industry, it’s encouraging. But in this case, it’s a clear sign that Indiana sports betting is continuing to flourish.
June’s handle was a 33% jump from last June’s $224.1 million. Adjusted gross revenue (AGR) showed an even larger year-to-year jump. Last month’s $30.5 million more than doubled June 2023’s $19.5 million, a whopping 56.8% increase.
Both handle and AGR dropped in June from the previous month. That’s expected. It’s a normal part of the sports betting cycle. Sports betting generally drops off in the summer months because of an absence of popular sports to bet on.
Compared to May, June’s handle dropped 17.5%. June AGR was down 21.8% month-over-month.
With June numbers added, Indiana’s lifetime sports betting handle rose to $17 billion. Indiana is just the eighth state to go over that mark to date.
Baseball the most popular sport wagered on in June
The MLB season is in full swing, and it showed up in the sports betting numbers for June. Baseball accounted for $83.5 million in handle, nearly 28% of the total wagers made last month.
Basketball was the second-most popular sport to wager on in June, taking in $33.3 million. It’s safe to assume a good chunk of that total came from bets made on the WNBA and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark, since the NBA Finals wrapped up in the middle of the month. Basketball made up roughly 11% of the total handle.
The Indiana Gaming Commission doesn’t break up individual sports by league, so we don’t know for sure just how much of that handle comes from WNBA action. But given the extreme uptick in eyes on the league this year, and specifically the Fever, there was a 38% jump in handle year-over-year for the sport.
There was a long gap between the second- and third-most popular sports. Football came in third, totaling $2.7 million in handle during June. Other sports totaled $90.5 million.
Parlay betting remained a popular betting option. The growing trend in betting totaled $88.1 million in June.
DraftKings remains most-popular sportsbook in Indiana
DraftKings Sportsbook Indiana was by far the most popular sportsbook in Indiana during June. The operator totaled $113.1 million in bets last month and totaled $9.9 million AGR.
FanDuel Sportsbook Indiana was the next closest operator in terms of handle, clocking in at $83.6 million. FanDuel’s June hold was 14%. The operator collected $11.7 million AGR in June, almost $2 million more than DraftKings.
BetMGM Sportsbook Indiana finished June with a handle of $28.2 million, collecting $3.5 million AGR.
Caesars Sportsbook Indiana generated $17.4 million in handle in June, but a poor hold percentage resulted in just $768,600 AGR.
Bet365 was the only other sportsbook to finish the month with a handle higher than $10 million, with $14.4 million. Its AGR came out to $1.3 million.
ESPN BET rounded out Indiana’s top-six operators with a handle of $9.8 million and AGR of $1.1 million.
